How to find a Sydney hospitality job

So you’re about to come to Sydney to study in one of our world-class universities or start your once-in-a-lifetime working holiday? Fantastic – you’re going to have a great time. Sydney can be an expensive city, so it’s likely you’ll want to work to cover your costs and make some extra money, perhaps by getting a Sydney hospitality job. Sydney’s hospitality industry is thriving and always crying out for staff. With that in mind, how do you find a Sydney hospitality job?

Check your visa conditions

The first thing you need to do is check your visa conditions.

Generally, international students can work for up to 40 hours every two weeks during their semester (e.g. outside holiday breaks). However, to address workforce shortages, the Australian federal government temporarily relaxed student visa work hours restrictions until 30 June 2023.

For backpackers, there’s only one condition: you can’t work for one employer for more than six months if you don’t have permission from Immigration Australia.

Apply for a Tax File Number (TFN)

Next, you’ll need a TFN: a personal reference number used in the tax and superannuation systems. Without one, your employer will have to withhold, 45% of your pay as tax.

Know your employment rights

Regardless of whether you are an international student or backpacker, you’ll enjoy the same workplace protections as anyone else working in Australia. These include:

  • Earning at least a minimum wage no matter what job you do
  • Being protected against unfair dismissal
  • Being entitled to leave, breaks and rest periods
  • Working in a safe and healthy environment

The easy way to find a Sydney hospitality job

You can look for a job the traditional way – print out copies of your CV and hand them out at every hospitality establishment. But this is time-consuming and likely to involve a lot of rejection.
